There are about 30 surf spots from LA within an hour's drive. My favorite spots are in Malibu, so we'll most likely spend the majority of our time in my hometown. The best part about California is that there is consistent swell year-round.

In the summertime, the water is warm and the swells come from the south. These swells tend to be better at points like Malibu and a couple others in the area. You might need a spring suit or 3/2 for summertime from May-September.

In the winter, the water's a bit cooler. I like to wear a good 3/2 or 4/3 to be safe. Winter swells tend to be bigger and more powerful, but there's always a variety of spots and conditions. If you're looking for barreling surf, I'd recommend winter for a better chance to score.

If you're looking for long beginner or intermediate surf, we can find that all year, any swell type.

The adventure

Believe it or not, Los Angeles is a surfer's paradise. You already know that Malibu is a world-class wave, but there are many nook and cranny local spots to surprise even the world traveler. Cruise with me and we'll find the best place for the day.

We'll start early and head to the surf spot based on your ability and the day's conditions. If you're a beginner, don't worry, I have the right boards and the perfect mellow waves. If you're intermediate to advanced, then we'll go on a bit more of a mission to make sure you score. Either way, after we burn ourselves out in the water, we'll head to one of my favorite cafes for a bite and coffee. Malibu and Los Angeles has so much to offer that the options are endless.

The culture

Los Angeles and Malibu are world-famous travel destinations for a reason. Malibu was basically the birthplace of surf culture.

To cruise at Malibu and put your longboard along the iconic wall is a must-do - It's a vibe. Driving through town, we'll run into pro surfers, stop into surf shops, and check out the LA sights.

The food and drink scene is world-class. Whether it's coffee, smoothies, or healthy food spots, you'll be blown away.
