The surfing coastline of the Sea of Cortez is a spectacular area where the desert meets the sea, delivering some incredible world-class waves. Waves are suited to all skill levels with long-drawn-out walls (primarily rights), with relatively easy paddle-outs.

Swell can range from knee to double overhead+, with the larger swell holding incredibly well with plenty of opportunities to get the longest and biggest wave of your life! Knowing this coastline inside out is important, as waves in the area are very susceptible to winds, tides & swell direction. With Cabo Down Under we share our wave knowledge with you and take the guesswork out of the equation so you will always get the best waves of the day.

Given we have 2 coastlines that work during summer and winter, there are waves every day if you know where to find them. The water is warm all year-round.

The adventure

Cabo is a one-stop shop for Surf, Sun & Fun! It has all the food, culture, activities and surf you could dream of, all packed into one little corner of Mexico. Surfing in the Baja region is unique because we have waves both in the Sea of Cortez and the Pacific.

Being perfectly located here in San Jose, we have a large range of waves to choose from, whether you are a total beginner or a seasoned pro, with waves still being considered uncrowded. Therefore, it is not uncommon to find yourself at one of our world-class waves and have it all to yourself! Apart from the beauty of the area and the quality of the waves, during the peak surf period from June - Oct, the water is a balmy 32°C (90°F), so almost like surfing in a hot tub!

Our main target destination between March - November are the waves along the stretch of coastline called the East Cape. With the contrast of desert, mountains and pristine waters (plus a few donkeys) its hard to rival. Even before you enjoy these waves, the journey out to the East Cape is an experience in itself.

Apart from its surf, San Jose itself is a beautiful small town with an incredible atmosphere at night, especially on Thursdays when they have the art walk through the main streets. There are also some amazing hot springs, waterfalls and beaches that can be explored that not to many visitors know about. When in Cabo, it's hard not to get caught up exploring the different food options in town too. As an Australian, with historically a very basic cuisine (I don’t think Vegemite even counts) Mexican food is packed full of flavors! As a tip, if you ask a Mexican how much chili there is in some food, and they say only a little…. be sure it will still make you sweat!

Accommodation

While Cabo San Lucas is undoubtedly focused on tourism, its quieter neighbor, San Jose del Cabo, is a more sophisticated retreat. If you want to experience some authentic Spanish colonial character, then this it the best place for you to stay in Cabo. San Jose is also definitely the best option when it comes to being close to surf breaks, around 25min from the east Cape and 5min from the waves in town.

There are various options that I can recommend depending on your group's need and preferences. Just let me know and I'll help you finding the perfect getaway for your Cabo vacation.

Glen Gaudion

My name is Glen, a born and bred Australian from Melbourne. With the ocean being part of everyday life growing up it was only a natural progression moving through Junior Life Guards, to body boarding and ultimately finding the passion for surfing at an early age.

After hanging up the suit and tie over a decade ago I traveled the world working as a surf coach in Ecuador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Mexico, Maldives, Australia & Portugal. With extensive coaching experience working and developing all levels of surfers, along with accredited surf coaching and lifesaving qualifications, the passion is still as strong as ever.

Share my knowledge of surfing whether it be getting total beginners their first wave or advanced surfers into the best waves of their life. As they say “there are no bad days at the beach”.

We take the personal approach of creating a special experience for every single guest. Each booking is private, so you don’t have to worry about others joining.
