Lanzarote belongs to the Canary Islands Archipelago. It’s located around 100km to the West, off the South Moroccan coast. It’s very sunny, dry, and warm all year round. There are around 50 surf spots for different levels spread on a tiny island, which you could cross by car in half an hour. There is something for everyone.

During the winter months, from September to March, the island receives solid ground swells from North to West. Quemao Class Big Wave Invitational and other international surfing competitions take place on the North Shore of Lanzarote during winter. The South and then East coast of Lanzarote are also full of surf spots, but they are not as consistent as the surf spots in the North West area of the island. From December to April, the water temperature can vary between 17℃ and 21℃. On a sunny and wind-still day, you might want to go for a quick paddle in board shorts, but for a proper session, most people feel comfortable using a full-suit 3mm.

Summer months are mostly characterized by wind swells and easy waves on our beach in Famara for learners and intermediate surfers. Predominant for this time of the year is the North East winds, which can create some fun waves on the east coast. The reef breaks on the Northern Shore of Lanzarote are usually flat during the summer months. The water temperature varies between 23℃ and 26℃, so you want to prepare board shorts and a spring suit, just in case.

What to do in Lanzarote

On flat days or days used to rejuvenate away from the waves, you might want to take a closer look around the island and see it for the artistic, natural work of art that it is. Whether you are into museums and galleries or would rather suss out some of the island's natural beauties.

The Timanfaya National Park is an eerie and surreal national park covering over 5,000 hectares of lava formations and volcanoes near the west coast of Lanzarote. The Timanfaya National Park should be on everyone's list when scoping out things to do in Lanzarote.

Timanfaya has been included in the Unesco Network of Biosphere Reserves and offers visitors spectacular views of the black and red landscape somewhat resembling mars.

Mirador del Rio is over 400 meters high on the Risco de Famara lies an intricate architectural viewpoint designed by none other than Cesar Manrique. Mirador del Rio consists of a cafe, souvenir shop and platform, all integrated into the majestic volcanic rock formation.

A panoramic view over the strait of Rio through the eyes of the Mirador (the two large glass windows) leaves visitors speechless.

Montana Corona is a beautiful Mountain just behind Costa Teguise. Great place for a walk and climb, offering great views over the valley and Costa Teguise below. Especially beautiful during golden hour.

The Cesar Manrique Foundation, Cesar Manriques home of 20 years, is located in Taro de Tahiche. This stunning building in the thick of volcanic rock was designed by the artist himself. The site invites visitors to dwell amid lava and fruit trees and bewonder some of the Manriques paintings exhibited in the artist's former studio.

I'm Andrey, the founder of Red Star Surf. By the end of the nineties, during my university years in Berlin, I had a chance to try surfing for the very first time and fell in love with it straight away. From that moment on, I was only pursuing the dream of living by the sea to surfing every day.

I also wanted to share this feeling with my friends. While showing them how to do it, I felt that teaching them how to surf was a real blessing. That fire in the eyes of someone who just got his first wave felt priceless to me.
