El Salvador's coast faces directly south, which means it gets hit with south and southwest swell, allowing fantastic summertime energy and waves. The surf season is from March to November, but usually, you can find fun surf breaks year-round. For the most experienced surfers, March and April are the best months, with warmer temperatures and when the swells start arriving. In general, spring through fall is the best time of the year for waves. For kids and beginners, January is the best month.
The El Zonte break is right in front of our lodge. Other famous waves nearby include Mizata, Km59, Km61, La Bocana, Punta Roca, and Sunzal. There are also many others to explore! We offer daily guided surf trips (additional fee) upon request.
Academy classes and surf camps
We have created a high-performance coaching program that is available for any level of surfer who is looking to improve their skills. Surf camps run on a weekly basis, starting on Saturday (arrival) to Saturday (departure), with the option of booking multiple weeks.
This unique program was created by Puro Surf founder and former pro surfer, Marcelo Castellanos. Marcelo infuses holistic methodology and a "3 circles of power" philosophy into his teaching. Once enrolled, you will be contacted via zoom to make a general evaluation to understand better what you need. We will then proceed to send you some tips and suggested exercise routines, to prep up for your trip. If you have recent personal surfing videos this could further your initial assessment.
We have everything you need to enjoy your time in our wonderland - a yoga studio, beautiful and comfortable rooms, healthy food, a well-structured gym, pools, a skatepark, and a very healthy cuisine style. As important as surfing and sleeping, we also care about what you eat. No matter what you are looking for, we will have everything you need to make your days with us a lifetime experience.

Beginner: This is where you'll start being in contact with surf, a common fact of beginner surfers is that they know little to nothing about the ocean, and this is where the adventure begins by sliding on white water waves on shallow sandy beaches.
Novice: Once a surfer is past the beginner stage of surfing and starts paddling out to catch unbroken waves, they are what could be called "novice" surfers. These surfers have little ocean awareness, make many mistakes on take-off, and generally ride horizontally across their waves without performing maneuvers. They like to be over the top of their surfboard with a little leaning of their surfboard onto its rail. The length of the ride is the most important aspect of a good ride.
Foundations*: As a surfer becomes more experienced and aware while in the ocean, foundation surfers start positioning themselves on the peak more correctly, taking off with more confidence, and performing top-to-bottom maneuvres as they surf down the line. They can create speed at take-off and successfully finish their waves more often. Performing top-to-bottom moves is a key aspect of their performance.
Emerging: At this stage surfers push their performance by attempting bigger and more complete maneuvres. They challenge themselves by taking off from a deeper position on the peak, attacking the first maneuver of their ride, and continuing performing committed maneuvres for the duration of their rides. Additionally, they start to experiment with progressive surfing. Performing committed maneuvres is a key aspect of their performance.
Pre-elite: Surfers at this stage can surf their waves with confidence, displaying deep positioning in the ocean in all types of surf, assertiveness when catching waves, commitment when taking-off, and the ability to perform a large variety of maneuvres, all with technical proficiency. Competitive surfers, know how to prepare and win the heat and "back themselves" when under competitive pressure. Making good decisions when in the ocean is a key aspect of their performance.
We will assign a board that will best suit your surfing level. If you are a beginner or novice we will assign a Liquid Shredder soft board. If you are on the foundations to advanced level, you will be handed a board chosen from our vast variety of surfboards. You can check the quiver at https://purosurf.app.awayco.com/ For this, we will send you a code so that you reserve your surfboard before your trip, to ensure availability during your stay. Feel free to bring your board!
The greatest benefit of ice baths is that they simply make the body feel good. After intense surf training days, the cold immersion can be a relief to sore, burning muscles. We combine breathing techniques and meditation so that you may reconnect with the present moment and improve awareness.
My favorite place in the world is Puro Surf. This is my home. We have perfect waves—rights, left, barrels—almost every day. Here, I have access to all the things I love the most; surfing, yoga, skate, jiu-jitsu, swimming, good food, and all my best friends, even my roommates from university work here! With the Academy, I get to be around a lot of cool people from all over the world; the best surfers and the best pro athletes come here to have fun, train, or share their knowledge with me. I feel blessed that at Puro I can combine work, fun, life, and learn at the same time.
I am passionate about surfing epic waves (of course). I love learning and feeling that I’m improving, as well as teaching others and seeing their improvement! I come from a family of surfers and teachers, and I’ve been surfing since I was 5 years old. I’ve dedicated my life to surfing; I started competing nationally and internationally early on, and for all my teenage years, and then started to learn more about coaching. I’ve acquired different certifications in sports psychology and coaching, I’m an international course presenter for the ISA, and also the also founder of the company Puro Surf Hotel and Performance Academy. I’m constantly learning, researching, and practicing: I’m the coach of El Salvador’s surf team, as well as other international athletes.
I have created a holistic methodology and development program, including the 3 circles of power surf system that promote the progression of surfers in an inclusive way. Regardless of your level of surfing, you'll benefit from this program. Throughout my life, I have learned from the best coaches around the world, through seminars, courses, certification, books; and of course, putting into practice with surfers of all levels. All this has enabled me to create what I believe is an effective program that guarantees a rapid progression and constant improvement in a surfer’s ability.
