Puertecillo sand-bottom point is best when the sand gets a chance to settle after the intense winter storms, and when it's on, it rivals any left sandbar tube anywhere. It's further tucked in than Punta de Lobos, so while it does get less swell, the swells are super clean by the time they start wrapping around the headland.

When it's on, it's pretty much tuck in and go. There are also a few nearby point breaks that can be easily explored. Its basically the reason why I live in Chile.

The adventure

The trip begins with a pick up at the Santiago airport. After that, we will immediately head to a Puertecillo lodge, where we will get settled in and start our surfing. The idea is to be in one area with great surf per day. Eat, surf, sleep and repeat. This is the best plan in this relaxing place.

Culture

Puertecillo is basically a small surf community in a tiny town. People here are mostly well-to-do surfers that own vacation homes in this area. The city was discovered by surfers in the late '80s and surf is a big part of the local culture.

Gastronomy

There are a few great restaurants with a limited but delicious menu. There are a couple of hangout bars, but most of the social scene is held at homes of the local community.

Accommodation

You can choose between a charming surf lodge or a great rental home. Walking distance from the beach and surrounded by the fantastic nature of the Puertecillo region, these accommodations are fully equipped and have a great area.

No matter where you are staying, you will have a great time and amazing surf.

I am Alex Otero, originally from the Dominican Republic now settled in Chile. Film and photography have been my profession for the past 30 years and surfing and windsurfing my passion for the past 40. My love for nature and great surfing brought me from the Caribbean to Chile, where I feel the earth and the person become one.

The Pacific coastline of 2,700 miles (4,300km) and the breathtaking Andes Mountains make this a unique experience for anyone and everyone. I have been exploring this country thoroughly as a surfer and as a documentary photographer for decades, even before moving here permanently. I love being a host and sharing with people the natural gem Chile is.
