It's like living in a treehouse

"Tucked away 2 min walk from the coast, our cabins are built on 14 feet stilts to bring you closer to the canopy and its wildlife. We are ideal for nature lovers, beach addicts, surfers, outdoor enthusiasts, explorers, day-dreamers, and independent, adventurous soles. Fall asleep to the sounds of the jungle and wake up to the sound of the waves!"

From December to April, there are pretty consistent waves and solid swells. From June to August, we have another short season, a bit less consistent, so a longer trip to the area is advised. We are in the Caribbean, so expect very warm water, with an average temperature of 81.5 F (27.5 C). From our place, you can get to at least 4 breaks by walk or bike - Bluff, Paunch, Dumpers and Tiger Tail all face about North-East. Early risers will be rewarded with glassy mornings, with a light breeze usually picking up around 11 am.

A perfect day

Imagine waking up to the sounds of the jungle: howler monkeys and birds greeting the day. Light stretching on your deck and walk to check out the waves. The only decision is to: surf Paunch (3 min walk), Tiger Tails (4 min walk) or Dumpers (10 min walk)? Paunch break is our favorite - with both left and right it's a perfect spot to see the sunrise as you paddle out, way before other surfers arrive from town.

The lodge

Our objective is to offer a unique, comfortable, sustainable, and private place in the tropical forest to independent travelers. Our cabins are like treehouses, with screened windows, skylights in a bright and open environment.

They have a kitchen, so you can feel free to cook whatever you wish during your stay, and a spacious deck, good to practice yoga or relax while reading a book. There is a laundry service and reusable shopping bags available.

If you have an extreme phobia of insects or require air-conditioning or TV to feel comfortable, this is not the place for you. Please also note that we still don't have the necessary structure to accommodate people with restricted mobility.

Activities

We can lend snorkeling equipment to our guests if they wish to go for an adventure when not surfing. Even non-surfers will find plenty to do: snorkeling, diving, boat day tours, fishing, yoga, beachcombing, wildlife watching/photography, island hopping, exploring or just relaxing in numerous over-the-water bars/restaurants.

Eco-friendly principles

We have designed our place by following eco-principles and hope you'll appreciate them too. Our vision is to adapt to the natural environment, not the other way around! The construction of the cabins was planned around existing trees as not to cut down any trees or disturb the canopy, used by the wildlife as their "roads" and "bridges". All the water comes from the rain catchment system, good for your skin and the environment.

We use biodegradable laundry detergent and make our gentle cleaning products. All the wood for our cabins is locally sourced, and we try reducing environmental impact by minimal use of cement, no grass lawns, no air-conditioning, and LED lights only, so this place is a real gem for those who enjoy being in the wild. One of the obstacles we faced was how to get internet when you are inside the canopy of a jungle....but don't worry, we solved it!

We also like to support local communities and buy as many locally produced items as possible: organic cacao, tropical fruits, fresh bread and eggs from the neighbors, coconut water and coconut oil, local fish, raw sugar.. just to name a few!

Upcoming projects

Our next, somewhat challenging project is to install one or two small viewing platforms in the canopy of one extraordinary huge tree that we have on our property - sounds doable, right? We love the idea to be able to observe from a different perspective and get closer to the magical canopy and its wildlife.

Getting there
Fly to Bocas del Toro International Airport. From there, take a cab to our lodge - it's a 15-min drive.

Jane & Max

We (Jane & Maxi) first came to Bocas in 2013 for only one month, but we just couldn't leave. Bocas worked its charm, we have fallen madly in love. Living next to the surf break gives us a unique chance to surf in optimal conditions. We feel privileged living in the middle of tropical forest with all its wildlife, yet only 5-12 minutes walking to few bars/restaurants or 20 min bicycle ride to Bocas town for a night our or just a quiet dinner. We are grateful to be able to live a simple life in the archipelago and to share our passion for surf, nature, and Bocas del Toro with our guests.
