Highly consistent Indian Ocean South swells make the Maldives one of the planet’s most consistent surf zones. Almost every trip offers quality surf every single day. All waves peel mechanically over perfectly contoured coral reefs without the shallowness and danger found at many other surf destinations.

Being on board the surf charter in the Maldives is the most comfortable way to enjoy the best surf spots in the area. Forget about paddling and duck diving to reach the line-up. We will drop you there directly with the dingy!

This is a place where you can ride the best waves of your life without fearing for your safety. And if your home surfs are short beach breaks, you’ll love the long rides.

Expect offshore winds most days with equal numbers of lefts and rights, typically averaging chest high to once overhead. These warm water waves can be surfed on all tides, so you can surf all day long.

The surf season coincides with the southwest monsoon and runs from mid-May to November when the best swells are generated by low-pressure winter systems in the southern Indian Ocean.

Southern Atoll

The Outer Atolls, approximately 300 miles to the South of the capital, Male, contain at least a dozen potent world-class reef breaks that are rarely surfed. This area can only be accessed by a well-equipped surf charter vessel. The surf in the Outer Atolls is usually a few feet bigger than the North Male Atoll, hollower and shallower, similar to Indonesia-style breaks.

The Maldives’ remote “Outer Atolls”, a.k.a. Southern Atolls, centering on the region of Ghafu Dhalu, is one of surf travel’s last great frontiers, offering world-class surf with fewer crowds. This area is far removed from the busier North Male Atoll, where all the resort-based surfing and the majority of Maldives surf charter boats are based. The surf here consists of world-class reef bottom breaks comparable to Indonesia and the Mentawais.

The boat

Southern Cross is a surf charter very recently refurbished, designed, and adapted for surfers by surfers. The vessel, supplied with all imaginable comforts to enjoy your surf charter in the Maldives islands, is moored in Male, the capital of the Republic of Maldives.

Here in Male, we have our offices where we occupy ourselves with the logistics necessary for each trip and keep permanent contact with the boat to deal with any unexpected situation.

A very important thing is the food of active sport such as surfing requires an adequate diet for an energetic activity to enjoy the waves to the full. Our cook prepares 3 meals a day apart from the snacks between hours. For obvious reasons, fruit, vegetables, meat, and fish form the main part of the diet on board. We offer Western as well as Asian food, so the clients may try typical Maldivian food and get to know more about the culinary culture of this country. We assure an ideal and complete diet to provide the energetic requirements of our guests.

The surf charter is equipped with GPS, sounder, radar, and USB radio 16 channels. There is a large terrace on the up deck where the covers of the surfboards are stored, the perfect place to view the waves and enjoy our bar where we offer a wide range of fresh fruit juice, soft drinks, liquors, wine, and beer. As for safety, the vessel is equipped with life jackets, oxygen, a first aid kit, and fire extinguishers. The boat also has snorkeling equipment and local-style fishing gear.

Southern Cross has 12 bedrooms. Each room has a bathroom, air conditioning, individual spacious beds, and a personal wardrobe. There is also a spacious living room with a dining table, comfortable sofas, TV, DVD, optional WIFI, and a completely equipped kitchen.

Local islands

The best way to experience ordinary Maldivian life is to visit a local island. Some of these islands are slightly more modern: with brightly painted house walls and harbor areas. There are also quiet fishing villages with lots of tree shade, swings, and the traditional wooden holhuashi. A holhuashi is rather like an island version of a gazebo, built with hollow wooden trunks tied together, forming the large, bench-like seat, and often with a thatched roof. They are conveniently set up on beaches, often where the boats come in and are a place where islanders wind off after a day’s work, exchanging news, telling stories, playing cards, and listening to local radio.

It is a typical island custom that everyone finishes their work by late afternoon, take their daily showers or bath near their wells, dress the children in fresh clothes and go for a stroll on the island, visits friends and relatives, delivering small bowls of fresh homemade curry, or taking some time to relax at the beachside, watching the late afternoon sun while the children play around at the beach.

Snorkelling

The richness and variety of marine life in the Maldives have to be seen to be believed. There are over 700 varieties of fish that have been seen swimming around the lovely coral reefs and atolls of the Maldives. The system of coral atolls and reefs can be described as an underwater city, where coral reefs interspersed with aquatic plants provide fish and other marine life in the Maldives a viable environment to live in and flourish.

Nearer the reefs, where it is safe to swim, you can see turtles, sea anemones, octopuses, and eels. There are numerous species of fish that make up the marine life in the Maldives. Some of the fish you can see in the Maldives are Skipjack, also called Maldives Fish, Dogtooth Tuna, Butterflyfish, Sweetlips, Fusiliers, and more.

Snorkeling is one of the best ways of discovering the hidden world underwater, right over the shallow reefs. The Maldives is considered one of the best places in the world for underwater photography.

Fishing

Affluent aquatic species including tuna, groupers, barracudas, emperors, rainbow runners, trevally, squirrelfish, and various other vibrant fishes make Maldives one of the best places for fishing. Provides a sizeable proportion of the gross domestic product and job opportunities for the vast majority of the island population. It is an integral part of the local existence.

Fishing from the boat is a great experience, making the free time onboard active, fun, and entertained. The surf charter provides local stile fishing gear for free to our passengers. The government of Maldives strictly prohibits the hunting of whales and dolphins and the use of harpoon guns.

Managing director
Andres Crespo

The adventure began in 2007, when Andres, with 20 years of experience organizing and enjoying surfing trips to major destinations worldwide, took a large step by acquiring his boat to operate surf trips in the Maldives. Finally, the project became a reality of great efforts. Andres offers to surfers from all over the planet to accompany him on this adventure, between atolls, turquoise waters, and waves of great perfection.

Our mission is to give the surfers an unforgettable experience on board with all the characteristics of a surf trip in the Maldives since this great project was born by a surfer that traveled all around the world searching for the best waves.

The crew has a great experience at sea. They are very respectful and friendly so our clients can find themselves comfortable, safe and with good service. All the trips are guided by Andres, the boat owner with 10 years of experience surfing in the Maldives, who speaks English, Italian and Spanish.

We operate different surf trips in the Maldives depending on the season, searching for the best waves possible through the other atolls according to the surfing level of the guest on board to minimize risk and guarantee a lot of fun.
