The waves break year-round with larger swells, starting in April and continuing through summer's northern hemisphere. This is an ideal time to visit because swells are more consistent and the lineup is less crowded - if you can handle the bigger surf, rain and heat.

For those who like the cooler temperatures, clean and consistent knee to shoulder/head high waves occur in the high season, which runs from October through April.

Mid-December to mid-January is when the waves are the smallest yet very fun, clean, and consistent - ideal for beginners and longboarders in the knee-to-waist-high club. If you are an advanced surfer, we do venture to unmarked locations for a change of scenery at this time, but I recommend spring/summer as an alternative.

The adventure

Troncones is a small seaside village located between the Sierra Madre mountains and the Mexican Riviera. This is where visitors come to find peace, great surf, and the classic atmosphere of a Mexican getaway. The 3-mile long coast has attracted surfers looking to surf the many world-class breaks in the area.

The village is also known for its eco-tourism and activities like horseback riding on the beach, hot spring snorkeling, kayaking, and fishing can be booked during your trip.

Troncones is an excellent destination for the whole family: surfers and non-surfers. The nightlife is very active. You can find bars and restaurants with live music and great authentic Mexican cuisine.

Getting there
Fly to Ixtapa Zihuatanejo International Airport (ZIH). From there, it is a 40-minutes drive to Troncones.

Hola, I am Ciego Ayala, born in Zijuatanejo. I grew up surfing and bodyboarding all the spots. I'm a national champion in bodyboarding and a pro surfing competitor. I am also a great longboarder. I consider myself a true water sportsman, having experience in longboarding, shortboarding, bodyboarding, and paddle surfing.

I started instructing in 2007 and since 2015 I run Zanka Surf School in Troncones Beach. I know the best surf in the area and will be more than happy to show you the best waves, gastronomy, and culture of this unique destinations.
