Consistent swell, warm water and offshore winds 300+ days per year will keep you in great conditions for your entire stay. All types of waves are at your fingertips along the coast, from peeling rock reefs to hollow beach breaks.

Southwestern Nicaragua receives 300+ days of offshore winds per year. The constant South swells, warm and pristine water, and the beautiful untouched surroundings make this region ideal for year-round surfing.

The primary swell season is from March through November. Waves come in fast, averaging from shoulder to overhead on fun surf spots but often reach double overhead or higher at more adventurous breaks. October is an off-season month due to strong onshore winds and frequent heavy rains, although the weather gets more fair towards the tail end.

November still sees strong swells, and this is the least crowded time in Nicaragua. December to February have stronger offshore winds that create waist-to-shoulder high surf. The water is also cooler at this time.

The lodge

Watch the sun set below the horizon from your bed or enjoy a good book laid back in your hammock. Each cabaña has been designed and built with love. You’ll feel a direct connection to the ocean from the comfort of your own cabaña. Each room has a view of the horizon.

We have 6 private cabañas perched above the sand, all offering ocean views. The cabañas are comfy, airy, and private, providing you with ideal beachfront accommodation. Each cabaña has a private patio, hammock, and sink.

The rooms have been built with the purpose of maximizing your comfort and privacy. Three large screened-in windows allow the consistent breeze to blow through, while the louvered doors provide airflow and privacy.

At the heart of the property is the beachfront terrace. This shared space is at your disposal: enjoy your morning cup of Nicaraguan coffee, sip a cocktail as you watch the sunset, or roll out your mat and practice yoga.

This full kitchen is designed for the traveler who likes to cook. Groceries are available nearby, but for longer stays, we recommend stocking up in Rivas or Managua. A fruit truck passes by a few times each week and other essentials are available by delivery, foot, or tuk-tuk.

Not in the mood for cooking? Don’t worry. There are nearby restaurant options that suit all budgets. Guests share a kitchen, dining room, and bathroom facilities. The fully equipped kitchen will have you feeling right at home. The hot showers are a surprising treat after a day of surf. We provide both the privacy you need and the space to hang out if you’re feeling social.

Fishing charters

Charter boats are available for both in-shore and off-shore adventures. The boats come ready with all the equipment you need to hook a Spanish Mackerel, Barricuda, Roosterfish or Dorado, among others. We are happy to arrange this expedition upon your arrival.

Yoga

Relax, rejuvenate, and revitalize. Whether you want to develop your personal practice or join a class, there are options for you. There are several yoga classes offered within walking distance. We are happy to give you the details.

Horseback riding

Riding off into the sunset is actually something that happens here! We can arrange a variety of horseback riding tours to suit your riding ability. Enjoy a morning stroll down the beach or galloping across the countryside. There are plenty of enjoyable options available.

Explore Guasacate

Playa Popoyo offers many opportunities for exploration and adventure. Romp out into the surrounding stands of mango trees and look for birds and monkeys. Kick-off your flip-flops and comb the beach for unique shells and rock formations. Take a ride to Guasacate and relax at a tide pool. Bathe at the local hot springs under the light of the stars.

Local community tours

Take a local community tour and discover a new perspective as you observe the authentic life and culture of people in the beautiful countryside of Nicaragua. There are several different community tours in the area. On the tours, you will learn about local cuisine, customs and traditions from a local guide.

Ali, the owner of Suyo, moved from Canada to Nicaragua in 2010. Working as a landscape designer since then and saving money, she was able to design and build Suyo, opening in 2016. The hotel was designed to embody beach living.

Its style is quintessentially coastal and ideal for couples or anyone looking to surf, eat and relax in a hammock. Ali has been based in Cabo for several years now, calling the incredible waves of the Baja Peninsula both home and office.

Suyo sits in the heart of surf country. It's a ten-minute walk to Playa Santana, a fifteen-minute walk to Beginners bay, and a half-hour walk to Popoyo. Hop in a car or a boat and you can get to Astillero, El Penon, Panga drops, Colorado, or Manzanillo.
