The South Coast is between Port Edward and the southern perimeters of Durban’s urban sprawl. Here you’ll find some of the best right point breaks in the world as well as some sneaky fantastic beach breaks. Most breaks are uncrowded during the week and the water is warm.

Because most breaks are right-hand point breaks, the best swell direction is generally from the south. Many points start on rock and finish on sandbars, sometimes in the shore break. The best season for south swell is between autumn and spring when southern storms are more active and offshore breezes tend to blow, sometimes all day.

The adventure

The South Coast is a surfer’s dream setup - uncrowded right points with beautiful barrels and warm water. The South Coast surf trip could be a half-day, full-day, or multi-day adventure. It’s best to spend a few days searching for the best surf based on the swell and conditions.

I grew up and have surfed in this area my whole life, so we’ll be bouncing around to not only my favorite waves but also the cafes, restaurants and bars that make this stretch of coastline so unique.

South Africa is a picturesque, wild coastline, with cliffs, coves, animals and nature reserves around every corner. If the waves are off for a day here and there, there’s always a lot to do and see. I also highly recommend a short trip into the Elephant or Safari reserves. Let me know and we can arrange it.

Accommodation

The accommodation on the South Coast may vary due to the very wide variety of surf spots. Most options includes great bars and restaurants.

Ryan Ribbink

Ryan Ribbink is a "shoot from the hip", "what you see is what you get" kind of character with a large sense of humour and an affinity for big barrels. Born and raised on the Bluff in Durban, South Africa, Ryan grew up surfing a section of coastline that is considered to be the "North Shore of South Africa".

With waves like Cave Rock and Ansteys Beach moulding his barrel riding prowess and earning him high praise among the surfing community in South Africa.

He’s been frequenting the coastline of Mozambique since 1998, he’s paid his dues through trial and error and he knows just about everything you need to know about how to score waves over there.

Almost every major surf trip in Mozambique featuring professional surfers and film crews over the years has been run using his knowledge of the coastline and swell charts, earning him the status of "Mr. Mozam". He knows where to go and it’s not always easy to get there. Mozambique is still very much untouched and off the beaten track, but there are valuable African gems out there and he knows where to find them.
