Costa Rica

It seems like ever since The Endless Summer 2 showed the world those perfectly offshore frames of a sandbottomed peak known as Witch's Rock—Costa Rica has become a must-do on every surfer's travel list. With a wide variety of waves for any and all levels of surfer, incredible infrastructure for travelers and backpackers, and some of the most amazing local people you'll ever meet (known as ticos in CR), Costa Rica may have written the template for the warm-water tropical escape.

A quick escape, by the way, if you reside in North America. Regardless, from the world’s "second longest left," Pavones, in the south, to playful beachbreaks around Santa Teresa further north, Costa Rica delivers perennially, and is always a fail-safe option for extremely fun surf, wet season or dry.

Don't miss

  • Visiting the cloud forests in the mountains outside of San Jose
  • Viewing wildlife in the jungles/national parks (from an ethical/respectful distance)
  • The countless adventure sports opportunities like: white water rafting, trekking volcanoes, horse-back treks, zip line networks, fishing expeditions
  • A boat trip to waves on the Osa Pennisula or Witches Rock/Ollie's Point
  • Visiting the vibrant Caribbean side of the nation (which has powerful surf, to boot)

Key facts

  • Language: Spanish (Some English spoken on Caribbean side)
  • Currency: Costa Rican colón (CRC)
  • Cost of living: $$
