"One of our guests said it best, “This is more than just a surf vacation. This is an experience where you become part of a family — a community. The friendships that form are unique and make me feel so grateful to have an amazing tribe of surfer friends worldwide. If you are looking for the ultimate surf retreat—whether beginner or advanced, this trip has it all.”"

Surf amongst palm trees on the black sand beaches of Northern Nicaragua. From small long-boarding waves to fast and barreling A-frames, surfing in Nicaragua is excellent for all levels and for anyone who wants to learn how to surf. The beach in front of the resort has a right and left point break and a beach break in the middle. We are also a short drive from the famous “Boom”—one of the best waves in the world to learn how to get barrelled. Because of our isolated location, you can surf the emptiest waves in Nicaragua, and we make sure to take you to the best breaks each day based on the conditions.

Surf breaks

We have all kinds of breaks, including hollow (barrels) waves, long points, and easy beach breaks. Outside of the three breaks outlined below, we have easy access to 6 more breaks via our boat or via land in our land cruisers. We literally have waves for every level of a surfer on our doorstep.

The adventure

Learn how the locals do! Get to know the place where Rise Up began. Nicaragua is where much of our Rise Up familia staff call home, and we are very proud to be part of this community. The week is packed full of adventures so you can immerse yourself in the land of lakes and volcanoes.

  • Horseback ride on the beach and into the sunset;
  • Get your adrenaline up and go volcano boarding — Nicaragua is one of the only places you can do this in the world!
  • Learn how to make tortillas the local way;
  • Take a boat trip and wake surf through the estuary;
  • Get involved with our NGO, Rise Up Kids!

The Familia

At Rise Up, you are treated like family from the moment you arrive in Nicaragua. The week is designed to make you feel at home, connect with yourself and with other amazing people. The Rise Up Familia — our guests and staff — come from all different backgrounds and walks of life and can’t wait to share an incredible week with you!

The surf

At Rise Up we break down a week of surf coaching into different parts to help you rapidly progress your ability. We believe that just as much learning is done out of the water as in the water, which is why we integrate surf theory and video analysis into our daily lessons. With this diverse approach to teaching and armed with the right tools and surf coaching program, you’ll quickly be on your way to developing a refined and confident surf technique in no time!

The yoga

Whether you’re new to yoga, practice daily, or love meditation, you’ll quickly fall into rhythm overlooking the stunning blue waters where the jungle meets the sea. Yoga is offered daily by highly experienced teachers who tailor classes to the group’s needs — the perfect complement to surfing and a way to connect with yourself and feel your best.

The food

Our food philosophy is centered around fueling your body correctly for the week using fresh and local ingredients. Our chefs create delicious and nutritious meals that cater to every kind of dietary need. We enjoy all of our meals family-style in the open-air thatched-roof dining area. We include four healthy meals a day, plus appetizers and dessert! You will surely face each day feeling happy and healthy.

Here’s an example of a daily menu:

  • Cold breakfast: fresh fruit, banana bread, homemade peanut butter, yogurt, coconut & almond granola, fresh juice, coffee and tea;
  • Hot brunch: mango-chia chocolate yogurt cup, scrambled eggs, tomato basil salad, roasted veggies, avocado toast, and Gallo pinto (a Nicaragua favorite!);
  • Lunch: veggie burger with beetroot hummus, cabbage salad, and fried plantain;
  • Appetizer: local fish ceviche!
  • Dinner: Thai green curry, green mango with fried rice;
  • Dessert: roasted banana with rum toffee sauce and coconut cookie.

Accommodation

Tranquil escape is an intimate, peaceful, eco-friendly resort that sits above a beautiful bay in front of fun waves for everyone. The resort is surrounded by a beautiful old teak farm and was built using carefully chosen local materials that were put together with a truly elegant style. Since there are only four cabanas here, it is a unique space where we only host a maximum of 8 guests. All the cabanas, communal areas, bar, and pool look out over the bay and there are numerous surf spots within the area

The Retreat Vibes

Intimate small groups and perfect waves out front highlight this location. As with all our places and retreats, there are waves for all levels and we are here to create magical vibes with you and the rest of the Rise Up Familia where your dreams and aspirations are our focus every day.

A small and intimate location offering a more personalized experience.

Our space in remote Northern Nicaragua is a tranquil, open-air, and eco-friendly resort that rests on a 19-acre teak farm. You will wake up and fall asleep to the sound of the waves in an oceanside cabana, go for peaceful walks on the beach, and relax in a shaded hammock by the pool. Steps away from your stone and teak casita is a private pathway to one of the most beautiful beaches in Nicaragua. The intimate resort is truly one of the most beautiful places to stay—a minimalist’s dream!

Our accommodation has:

  • 4 cozy beachfront cabanas
  • Alfresco showers (shower under the stars!)
  • Private patio with hammock
  • Oceanview
  • Ceiling fans
  • WiFi – but we recommend disconnecting!

Note: We do not have warm showers. You will probably prefer cold ones anyways!

Corina
Co-Owner
Corina
Corina

Phil is from the island of Barbados. After studying in the UK and several years of traveling the world, he chose to call Nicaragua his home because of its fantastic waves, incredible nature, and most importantly, the great vibes of the people. Before Rise Up, Phil volunteered for a sea turtle project on the southern coast of Nicaragua. After a couple of years, he eventually took over a hostel in Leon called Bigfoot, which he owned and managed for four years.

Soon enough, Rise Up formed organically in 2009 from Phil’s love and passion for surfing, nature and for sharing good times and adventures with people. What started as a group of friends getting together to share good times, eventually picked up to a point where people were joining from all over the world. The name came to Phil during a morning surf session at a beach break that would later become the first Rise Up location.

Creating Rise Up and seeing it evolve has been an incredible journey that includes many amazing people and has transformed many others. Along the way, Phil and the crew have been lucky to surf and explore all corners of Nicaragua, building unparalleled local knowledge.

Phil & Corina

The most important part of the journey of Rise Up to date was when Phil met Corina in 2014. They met thanks to the first Swiss guest who came to Rise Up, who put Phil and Corina in touch in the hope that Corina would stay as a guest. At the time, Rise Up was closed, but luckily it was meant to be, and their paths still crossed one morning in the surf. Today, Corina, Phil and their beautiful daughter Kaya run Rise Up with the mission to make sure everyone who comes has the most fantastic experience possible.

Our staff & our dream

The Rise Up Staff are each very carefully chosen as an extended part of the family and make Rise Up so special. Before each retreat, it is common for the staff to get together and discuss how they’ll make each week amazing for their guests.

The dream is to see Rise Up continue to be a place where everyone feels at home—where guests know they’ll always be treated like family and be guaranteed a high level of care and service that is hard to find. Guests who choose to join us year after year enjoy one of the best well-rounded vacations on the planet where they get to learn, be inspired, connect with themselves, connect with others and connect with this incredible natural world in which we live. We are looking forward to welcoming you to our growing familia!
