Tofino is is Canada's surfing capital and it is renowned for its year-round surf appeal, miles of sandy surfable beaches, and world-class waves. Tofino is a surfing community with a culture of wet suits and rubber boots.
The water temperature is cool throughout the year (10°C/50F) - you'll need a wetsuit. What varies most in Tofino is the size of the swell. Here's an overview:
From March to May, Tofino gets some residual, larger swells out of the NW from the end of the winter storms. Spring brings a bonus of sweet southern swells. Typically by May, the wave size starts to die down—perfect for intermediate and new surfers wanting to get some experience before the busy summer season.
From June to August, the summer months are all about sunshine, smaller waves, and ideal conditions for first-timers wanting to take lessons and learn to ride. During this time, you'll find gentle rollers and small to mid-sized wind swells and long-period groundswell from the south. That said, larger southern swells are always a possibility. As a result, line-ups can be a bit busier this time of year but still not crowded by international standards.
From September to November, the first large swells of the season start to arrive in October, bringing frothy 10+ foot swells. The water is also the warmest it will be all year, winds switch to offshore (southeast) for perfectly groomed shape, and the beaches start to get less crowded and peaceful.
From December to March, the storms can bring 20- to 30-foot waves. Winds are still offshore from the southeast, grooming the waves to perfection. Seasoned surfers are rewarded with uncrowded line-ups, epic conditions, and challenges. This is not an ideal time for beginners, but there is always a sheltered beach with smaller waves for those looking to learn.

Pacific Surf Co has worked for a long time with various youth groups from around Canada. Because of our location, we have been able to share our Passion for the outdoors with children and young adults, who, for various reasons, would have never been able to experience the ocean and surroundings that we enjoy every day. For most of those kids, it was and has been a life-changing experience that we have been involved in. I love my lifestyle because I know how it makes me feel.
Our pillars are:
Passion We are fiercely passionate about what we do. We strive to share this Passion with our co-workers and every person who gets in the water with us, or simply visits our shop.
Community
We are proud community members that understand we are all connected. Working with and for our community is of utmost importance. We offer surf and the ocean programs to our local school children. We are the first coastal community in Canada to have something like this in the school curriculum. We are huge advocates of water so we use rainwater for all of our gear, we recycle all our neoprene and work closely with our local Surf Rider foundation on coastal initiatives. The biggest challenge we have is recycling and the types of materials used within our industry. It’s a tough one to tackle.
Environment
We understand that our actions significantly impact our social and natural environment. We make decisions to ensure we are leaders within our community regarding important environmental issues.
Accessibility
Everyone deserves an opportunity to experience the ocean. We make sure that’s possible.
Leadership
We create the space for everyone to be a leader in the many forms.
