Kaini Mentawais

The best season size-wise tends to be between May and September in general. That is when most of the bigger swells hit Indonesia and Mentawais. Even if it’s off-season, it is still on from December to February! There is always a wave in Mentawai. Even if it’s small, it’s still surfable, most likely. But generally speaking, the swells are mostly wind swells with short swell periods and less power.

The months of March, April, October and November are shoulder season. These are the times (seasons) of the year when the waves are mostly shoulder high. There is the occasional bigger storm in the southern ocean producing enough juice to get some overhead surf, but mostly it’s around shoulder high.

There is a multitude of waves around Kaini resort. The area, in general, is called a playground because of the many waves there are around. On Masokut island, there are 7 waves within walking distance from Kaini Mentawai and an additional 20 waves (at least) within a boat ride away. All the waves have unique characteristics and work differently depending on the winds, swell size and swell direction, and of course, the tides. Here is a small introduction to the waves around Kaini.

Kaini boutique resort has one of the best beachfront locations in the Mentawais, with surf breaks like Pitstops and E-Bay right on our doorstep. You will find five more surf breaks within walking distance on our island and more than 20 surf breaks reachable within 30 min by boat.

Kaini resort was built by our local builders and has a western design fused with traditional native craftsmanship. Our restaurant is spacious with a big open area and a beautiful high ceiling of sago palm leaves. Offers a unique space for yoga, gathering for dinner, chilling out at night, or watching the surf with Pitstop wave right out front.

Our in-house chef cooks the most delicious meals, with local flavors blended with Asian and western. Most of our meals will be prepared buffet style.

Enjoy a cocktail of choice, a beer, or why not one of our cooling ice teas while looking out over the ocean and the waves. Our restaurant area offers a first-row experience to the most incredible tropical sunsets. It's the perfect spot to kick back after a full day of surf and exploring.
