From November through March, the east coast is the best place to surf in Taiwan. Water temperates range from 22 to 25 C (72 – 77F) and it's warm most of the time. This less populated coast has a variety of river mouths, beach breaks and pointbreaks.

In addition, the North Pacific receives storms forming near Japan, delivering swell to Hawaii in their peak winter season. That way, we receive an abundance of groundswell. In addition, there is enough fetch from storms in the North Pacific for plenty of good wind swell that’s groomed and delivered in clean, stacked lines. Our waves are suitable for all levels of surfers – from beginners to advanced surfers and families. Keep in mind that the coastline is generally rocky.

The adventure

Situated between the Philippines and Japan, the mountainous island of Taiwan teems with people in thriving, modern cities but at the same time offers picture-perfect breathtaking vistas behind the scenes. High-rise buildings and ancient temples play a backdrop to numerous traditional folk festivals and ceremonies.

Jet into the capital, Taipei, or the port city of Kaohsiung and the island below greets you with majestic peaks, rolling hills and plains, basins and inlets, tropical beaches and green forests.

While the north of the country is heavily populated, the south and east coasts retain a laid-back, countryside atmosphere of old. Rice paddies, fish farms, temples and small towns dot the landscapes.

In the country’s six national parks, there are thousands of wildlife species, 20 percent of which are rare or endangered. With its volcanic origins, tropical climate and Polynesian flavor, Taiwan has often deservedly been dubbed the ‘Hawaii of Asia.’ In 1544, a Portuguese ship sighted the main island of Taiwan and dubbed it ‘Ilha Formosa,’ which means ‘Beautiful Island.’ Just look at the photos. You’ll see why.

Locked between Taiwan’s central mountain range and the Pacific ocean, the island’s rugged and largely unspoiled east coast presents the island’s most beautiful river and coastal scenery. Steep, towering cliffs drop into the sea and rivers cut deep and spectacular chasms into the mountains. A stone's throw inland, you can find rustic hamlets on rolling hills, tea plantations, hot springs and sweeping valley views down to the rice paddies.

There are plenty of non-surf options available; From Temples to restaurants (local and western), scenic tours, tea plantations, night markets, national parks, hot springs, art galleries, museums and more. In addition, there are mellow bike trails all around the town (suitable for families – free bikes provided). All drives and routes are very scenic.

Surf Taiwan

Leading trips since 2008
Neil "Moonwalker" Armstrong
Owner
Neil "Moonwalker" Armstrong

Neil has been a photographer and writer for many surf publications over the years and traveled widely, no country has intrigued or excited him more than Taiwan.

Surf Taiwan was founded in 2008 purely out of a desire to show friends and pro surfers he worked with how amazing this country is.

The whole business grew organically, largely through word of mouth and most of the clients are repeats or referrals.

Surf Taiwan thrives due to its reputation. Clients arrive not sure what to expect from their trip and leave happy with incredible memories. We're also the only surf operator who cover the entire country, and we regularly combine South and East Coast trips - at no extra expense.

Neil is truly passionate about what Taiwan can offer: being able to, in a single day; surf, visit hot springs, national parks, numerous beaches, food markets, go diving/snorkeling and then head into the mountains.

Surfing, living, and working in a country with such varied activities, geography, and rich culture means there’s never a dull moment. Being on an island that’s at the forefront of tech while respecting traditions is a pleasure.
