Quite literally: a Truck Surf Hotel

A convo with Daniela Carneiro—creator of the incredible Truck Surf Hotel, Portugal.

Thermal: So, a traveling surf hotel. This is quite a unique idea…how did you guys come up with it?

Daniela Carneiro: Well, before the Truck Surf Hotel, me and my boyfriend, Eduardo Ribeiro, had been traveling for years in a campervan, surfing and checking out the different cultures in countries like: Spain, France, the Netherlands, and Morocco. It must have been that campervan experience that really birthed the idea, but we wanted to create something even different than that to share this lifestyle and give other travelers that same flexibility—but with more comfort—in order explore different locations and waves.

So, basically, we imagined that the Truck Surf Hotel would be a totally unique surf trip experience. Whether surfing, or exploring nature, or new cultures—it would be traveling in a newer way. Definitely, a trip that you would always remember. We felt like it was something we could pull off, since we both knew a thing or two about “life on the road.” More importantly, we knew how to make life on the road feel more like a home on the road.

Epic. And what is you and your boyfriend’s backgrounds in travel and/or guiding?

We’re both from Portugal and besides being an avid surfer, I used to work as an Environmental Engineer. In 2013, however, I decided to quit my job and go on a trip for seven months to see the world and surf in places like: Morocco, Indonesia, Hawaii, Mexico and Brazil. Since then, I began working as an outdoor adventure guide, a surf photographer, and a surf instructor.

My partner, Eduardo Ribeiro, is a Portuguese surfer that teaches water sports (surf and kite surf) and also sails. He started doing surf trips 16 years ago in order to find the best waves and also participate in surf competitions. Eduardo quickly realized how magical every single trip is and wanted to share that magic and lifestyle with others.

Amazing. What spots do you find yourselves normally parking the Truck and surfing in Portugal?

We always park the Truck as close as possible to the ocean and in proximity to the best surf spots on our itineraries. For example: private property, farms, or public areas above the beaches where we have a permit from the local government. But, our favorite places are definitely: Maceda (Aveiro), Estela (Póvoa Varzim), and Viana do Castelo, which are all in northern Portugal. We also find ourselves in Ilha do Pessegueiro (Porto Covo) and Vila do Bispo, which are both in the southwest region of Portugal.

What do you think your favorite part is about these trips and being a guide on them?

For me, it’s definitely the freedom to travel and explore different surf spots, parking our “home on wheels” in beautiful locations near the ocean. We have a continual connection with the outdoors, and also a connection with the local communities from the places where we visit. Being able to share the best waves and places with travelers, and all with a good vibe on board—those are my favorite parts.

We’re pretty lucky to say that each trip brings so many unforgettable moments. Every week is different and that’s what is so special about life on the road. But, definitely being able to surf while we see the sun setting on the sea everyday and be connected with nature all the time is the best. Also, when we drive to Morocco, it’s always an adventure and exciting.

Oh, wow, you can take the Truck to other places besides Portugal?

Yes. At the moment, the borders are closed to Morocco, but we normally take the Truck there for good surf in the Winter. We can also make tailor-made trips to Spain and France with the Truck. A dream in the future is taking it to Australia…

Are there any challenges doing surf trips with a big truck like this?

You know, not really. At first, when we started four years ago, we had one or two unforeseens with the Truck, but Eduardo—whom I often call “MacGyver”—upgraded the Truck’s systems and we have been traveling ever since then smooth and easy. We also know exactly where to park and where to go—according to the best surf forecast—so that our guests can “go with the flow” easily. All the logistics and guidance are always guaranteed by us, and really, the whole experience is just as easy as traveling in a regular campervan.

Well, that’s good to hear.

Yeah, pretty much only advantages, rather than challenges [laughs]. For example, staying in the Surf Truck, you’re able to be the first person in the water at a break, and the last one out. We move and follow the swells. With us, you get the experienced, expert guidance of a surf school, the amenities of a surf lodge, and the comfort of a luxury hotel—all in one place. We also have a separate van that can shuttle you to and from the Truck for flexibility and specific strike missions. At the end of the day, there’s just not really anything quite like us.
